Inclusion Practices and Supports

Students are more dissimilar than they are alike.  They differ in terms of what they know, how they prefer to learn, and the best ways for demonstrating what they know.  Successful inclusion begins with teachers differentiating instruction to meet the needs of all their students. At the same time,  teachers must have a repertoire of research-based classroom management strategies to support the differentiated activities. Most students will need personalized accommodations at some points, while some will need modifications to content, process, and/or product  to ensure their success.  In some cases, general and special education teachers must co-teach to ensure success of their collective students, yet, many do not know the variety of co-teaching approaches available to them or how to co-teach within the context of each approach.

EdPro Development offers professional development workshops as well as onsite coaching.  We begin asking questions, observing classes, and identifying existing systems in place to support inclusion practices. We ask the administrator(s) and teachers for their desired outcomes from the professional development activities.  Armed with answers, we will work extensively with (a) a leadership team to self assess and generate an action plan for school-wide inclusive practices and/or (b) teams of general and special education teachers to self assess, generate goals and objectives, prioritize actions, implement "inclusion" practices, and evaluate the success of their efforts. All teams become professional learning communities in their pursuits of common goals and objectives.
